How Not To Write an E-Mail to a Man on a Dating Site

Let me start off by saying that as a woman, you should not write an e-mail to a man first. I personally do not recommend initiating contact with a man on a dating site. I am old fashioned and much prefer that a man contact me first. But to each their own, as they say, and if you are so compelled to write an e-mail to a guy on a dating site, you should make it really short.

Here is an e-mail my guy friend received recently on a dating site from a woman living nearby. I will include the e-mail here, and of course, I will slightly paraphrase it and I will not include any names. Below I will comment on this e-mail and why you should not write an initial e-mail on a dating site that is like the one below. So, here it is.

I have had your profiled saved for a few weeks and haven't written. Why? I am not sure. I really enjoyed reading your profile especially the part where you want a woman that has ample room in her heart to be filled with love, passion and devotion. I am looking for a guy where the little boy is alive and well and actively engaged in life. I am not just talking about living life, but doing it! Someone who is emotionally and physically available to reach true intimacy with one person. I believe that true intimacy is the connection of mind, body, soul and spirit; something that many people have never experienced nor have the idea that it even exists! The man I am looking for is self aware and uninhibited, spontaneous, passionate, romantic, and mostly soulful. He must be able to laugh at himself and recognize his faults as no one is perfect, but willing to grow together with friendship and honesty as the foundation of a wonderful relationship!

Don't let the corporate picture fool you; only one I had. I have a feminine side that is a huge part of who I am. I have been told that I am much prettier than my pictures; no games here. I have had misrepresentation done to me and it isn't nice! My hair is longer, curlier and I have a deeper tan. I am a Libra also and passion is the way that I live my life in whatever I am doing!

I personally think that this is a great e-mail except for one thing. Until you haven’t met, it is unreasonable to have such high expectations. You wouldn’t want to put your heart out for someone you’ve never met. Granted, deep down we all want what she had described. However, putting the cart before the horse and raising unrealistic expectations upon someone you’ve never met before is premature.
